About

Southwold's dominant business and the largest employer in a town of under a thousand people. George and Ernest Adnams bought the Sole Bay Brewery in 1872; the brewery site itself had been founded in 1818 and Adnams says brewing is documented here back to the fourteenth century. It still brews in the middle of the town on East Green, which is why the streets round the Sole Bay Inn smell of malt on a brewing morning. Southwold Bitter and Ghost Ship are the beers you will see on every bar in the district. The company also owns The Swan and The Crown, the Sole Bay Inn, the Lord Nelson and the Harbour Inn, and runs the town's public tours, so a fair amount of what a visitor does in Southwold is, one way or another, Adnams.
