Getting to Southwold
How to reach Southwold by train, bus, taxi, car, or bicycle.
Nearest railway stations
Southwold has no railway station. The narrow-gauge Southwold Railway to Halesworth closed on 11 April 1929 and nothing replaced it, so every rail journey here finishes with a bus, a taxi or a lift. The two nearest stations are Halesworth (CRS code HAS) and Darsham (CRS code DSM), both on Greater Anglia's East Suffolk line between Ipswich and Lowestoft. Halesworth is about 14km from Southwold by road, roughly a 16-minute drive, and is the practical choice because First Eastern Counties' 99A bus runs from there to Southwold. Be clear about what that connection involves: the 99A does not call at the station itself. Its nearest stop is on Norwich Road, roughly 250 metres and three or four minutes on foot from the station entrance, and First's own timetable lists it as "Norwich Rd for Rail Stn". Allow for that walk with luggage, and note that the shelter beside the platform is used by the local 511 community service rather than the 99A. Darsham is a shade further at about 15km and sits beside the A12 with very little around it, so it is only useful if someone is meeting you with a car. From London, the usual route is Liverpool Street to Ipswich and a change onto the East Suffolk line; there has been no direct London train to Halesworth since 2010.

Tips
- •Check the bus connection before you buy the train ticket: the 99A is roughly hourly on weekdays and Saturdays and is much thinner on Sundays and in the evening.
- •The 99A stop at Halesworth is a short walk from the station, not outside it. Add five minutes to any connection you are planning, and more if you are carrying luggage.
- •Darsham station is beside the A12 with almost nothing around it; do not plan to wait there for long.
- •There is no through ticket covering the train and the bus; the old Anglian Bus combined ticket was withdrawn when that contract ended.
Buses
The bus is how most people arrive without a car. The main stop is at the King's Head at the north end of the High Street. First Eastern Counties runs the 99 between Lowestoft bus station and Southwold along the coast, and the 99A between Southwold, Halesworth and Bungay, which is the station connection, although it stops on Norwich Road a few minutes' walk from Halesworth station rather than at the station. Borderbus runs the 146 to Norwich and the 524 to Beccles and Halesworth. High Suffolk Community Transport runs a 12 from Kenton and Yoxford. Locally, the Sole Bay Community Bus, known as Mr Bus, links Reydon through to Southwold Pier on a hop-on hop-off basis. Contactless tap on, tap off payment is accepted on the First services.

Tips
- •Sunday and evening services are much thinner than the weekday timetable; check before relying on a late bus.
- •Timetables for this area are collected by Suffolk On Board, which is the single most reliable place to check.
- •Borderbus runs shuttle services from Southwold, Halesworth and Kessingland for Latitude Festival at Henham Park in July, sold through its own app.

Driving and parking
Southwold sits at the end of the A1095, which leaves the A12 at Blythburgh and runs in through Reydon. There is one road in and one road out, over Mights Bridge, which is what makes summer weekends slow. The town has a mix of pay and display and free car parks, and the biggest by far is the 335-space pay and display beside the pier, which also has 16 blue badge bays, motorcycle bays, motorhome bays and coach bays. Harbour Quay East holds 228 and is the right choice for the harbour and the ferry. The free options are York Road and Godyll Road, both small and both full by mid-morning in August. Once parked, do not move the car: the whole town is walkable in twenty minutes end to end.

Tips
- •Arrive before 10am on a summer weekend or expect to circle.
- •Blue badge holders park free at meters and pay and display machines and in the marked bays at the pier.
- •Only the pier car park is lined; the others are unlined and rougher underfoot.
- •The Southwold Half Marathon in March closes roads on the route and runs a shuttle bus from an official car park.

Cycling
Southwold is flat, small and easy to ride, and the country behind it is gentle rather than demanding, which is why the town is full of bikes in summer. Southwold Cycle Hire and other local operators rent road, electric, mountain bikes and tandems. The rowed ferry to Walberswick carries bicycles for 1.50 pounds, which turns a long road detour via Blythburgh into a two-minute crossing and opens up Walberswick, Dunwich and the heath beyond. Bike racks are limited in the town centre in high season.

Southwold Pier car park
Charges vary; check the board on arrival. The biggest car park in Southwold and the only lined one, at IP18 6BN. Its 16 blue badge bays are wider for easier access; every other car park in the town is unlined, so while blue badge holders can use them there are no defined bays and the surface is rougher.
Harbour Quay East
Charges vary; check the board on arrival. IP18 6NB, the right choice for the harbour at Blackshore, the fish company and the Walberswick ferry. A second Harbour Quay East car park at IP18 6ND holds 47.
