The prom and the Swansea Bay path

← All things to do

About

The flat shared path round Swansea Bay runs along the line of the old Mumbles railway, the line the Dylan Thomas trail calls the first passenger railway in the world, which carried passengers from 1807 until it closed in 1960. The Mumbles end of it is the prom, rebuilt by Swansea Council's £26m coastal flood defence scheme, which opened officially in July 2025 with a new sea wall, a wider promenade for walkers and cyclists, and new public art. Walk it from Oystermouth to Knab Rock for the view of the pier, or ride it the other way towards Blackpill and Swansea.

Highlights

  • ✓Flat and traffic-free along the bay
  • ✓Follows the line of the Mumbles train (1807 to 1960)
  • ✓New sea wall and wider promenade, opened July 2025
  • ✓Joe's ice cream on Mumbles Road near the Oystermouth end
