About

The iron pier at the end of the headland opened on 10 May 1898, at the terminus of the Mumbles train, and it is now Grade II listed. The shore end is where the action is: the amusements (2p pushers, simulators, air hockey), the Beach Hut cafe and the Copperfish takeaway, all run by the pier company, which also runs half-term and Christmas events through the year. The lifeboat station at the far end is the sore point. In 2023 the RNLI removed its all-weather lifeboat after a structural engineer raised concerns about the privately owned pier, and the owners closed a section of the pier to the public; in February 2025 the station was still shut, with the lifeboat moored a couple of hundred metres offshore and crews reaching it by boarding boat. The pier company's own pier page still carries text from its 2019 reopening, so do not plan on walking out to the lifeboat house: enjoy the shore end and the view from the prom, and ring the pier if the deck matters to your visit. The fishing platforms are closed.
