The Reading Rooms
31 Hawley Square, Margate, Kent
About
Two rooms. That is the whole business, and it is the point. The Reading Rooms is a Georgian house on Hawley Square, the leafy garden square just inland of the Old Town, and each of its two en-suite guest rooms occupies an entire floor of the building. The bathrooms are the thing people talk about: cast-iron roll-top baths, mosaic-tiled wet rooms, antique cast-iron radiators. It is four minutes' walk to Main Sands, the beach sauna, Turner Contemporary and the Old Town, and about fifteen minutes out to the Walpole Bay tidal pool if cold-water swimming is why you came. With two rooms it books a long way ahead, and it is the opposite proposition to a hotel: no bar, no restaurant, no reception desk, just breakfast and a very quiet Georgian square.
