Getting to Llangollen

How to reach Llangollen by train, bus, taxi, or car.

Nearest railway station

Llangollen has no national rail station; the station on Abbey Road belongs to the heritage railway. The two nearest are on Transport for Wales's Shrewsbury to Chester line. Chirk (CRK) is the closer as the crow flies, about 8.1km south-east of Llangollen Bridge, and Ruabon (RUA) is about 8.7km east, but Ruabon is the one with a frequent bus into town: the Eisteddfod's travel page says Arriva's 5 and 5C run every 30 minutes between Wrexham, Ruabon, Acrefair, Trevor and Llangollen. The Eisteddfod puts both stations about 15 minutes away by car and calls Chirk a short taxi ride.

Ruabon to the bus
The Llangollen buses stop at 'Ruabon, after Station Road' on Bridge Street, about 150 metres in a straight line from the station by the two OpenStreetMap and bustimes.org positions. bustimes.org lists the 5, 5C, 5CY and TrawsCymru T3 and T3C there towards Llangollen.
Heritage station
Llangollen station on Abbey Road, near the bridge, is the Llangollen and Corwen Railway's, not part of the national network.

Tips

  • •Coming from Chester or Shrewsbury, get off at Ruabon for the bus; Chirk is the closer station but plan on a taxi.
  • •The rail widget is switched off for Llangollen because no national rail station is in the town.

Bus

The Llangollen Eisteddfod's travel page says Arriva's 5 and 5C run every 30 minutes between Wrexham, Ruabon station, Acrefair, Trevor and Llangollen, with extra buses at festival time; bustimes.org also lists a 5CY. TrawsCymru's T3, run by Lloyds Coaches, links Wrexham with Barmouth through Ruabon, Llangollen, Corwen, Bala and Dolgellau, and Transport for Wales says that since 29 June 2025 every T3 journey serves the Maelor Hospital in Wrexham.

Arriva 5, 5 C and 5 C Y
Wrexham, Ruabon, Acrefair, Trevor, Llangollen; every 30 minutes on the 5 and 5C per the Eisteddfod's travel page. The 5C and 5CY go by Trevor, the aqueduct side.
Traws Cymru T3

Tips

  • •For the aqueduct without a car, the 5C or 5CY by Trevor is the one to look at.
  • •Check Sunday and bank holiday times separately.

Driving and parking

Denbighshire County Council runs the pay and display car parks in town; its notice lists Brook Street, East Street, Hall Street, Market Street and Mill Street, with charges amended from 6 July 2026, so check the machine rather than an old tariff. The heritage railway and the Eisteddfod both send drivers to the Llangollen Pavilion car park on Abbey Road, about 500 metres from the town centre by the railway's reckoning; the railway asks visitors not to drive into the centre looking for a space.
