Weather & What to Bring

Weather

Llangollen sits in the Dee valley with hills on every side, so the weather on the castle hill and along the Eglwyseg escarpment can be very different from the weather on the bridge. A calm, mild morning in town can be a cold, windy one at the ruins.

Packing Checklist

  • ✓Waterproof jacket (essential year-round)
  • ✓Layers: temperature can change quickly
  • ✓Comfortable walking shoes
  • ✓Camera: the views are worth it
  • ✓Sunscreen: yes, even in United Kingdom

Bring Something Home

Local producers, markets, and makers worth a stop before you leave Llangollen.

Best Time to Visit

Spring

March - May

The railway's season runs from mid-February. The Horse Drawn Boat Company's 45-minute trips run daily from mid-March. Plas Newydd's house reopened for 2026 in late March and is open daily until 31 October; 2027 dates had not been announced as of October 2026.

Spring is when Llangollen starts up again. The railway's season begins in mid-February, by its own FAQ. On the canal, the 45-minute horse-drawn trips go daily from mid-March and the two-hour trip to the Horseshoe Falls starts at the end of the month. Plas Newydd's house season was from 28 March in 2026, with 2027 dates not announced as of October 2026, and Valle Crucis Abbey keeps Cadw's 10am to 4pm hours and charges nothing.

Summer

June - August

The 80th International Eisteddfod runs from Wednesday 7 to Sunday 11 July 2027 at the Royal International Pavilion, per the organiser; in 2026 it ran from 7 to 12 July.

Summer is Eisteddfod time. In 2027 the festival holds its 80th, from Wednesday 7 to Sunday 11 July at the Royal International Pavilion on Abbey Road, with Jools Holland on the Thursday and the Llangollen80 gala with Sir Bryn Terfel on the Saturday; for that week the town runs to its timetable. Outside it, the horse-drawn boats go every half hour in the school holidays and the two-hour boat across Pontcysyllte is the way to see the aqueduct from the water.

Autumn

September - November

The Fringe ran 4 to 13 September 2026 and the food festival 10 and 11 October 2026, both per their organisers. Ride the Rocket runs on Saturday 7 November 2026, and Plas Newydd's house closes for the season after 31 October.

Autumn has two of the town's own festivals now. The Llangollen Fringe, which used to sit in July, moved to September in 2026 and ran from the 4th to the 13th. The food festival takes the second weekend of October; in 2026 it was held on 10 and 11 October, free to get in, and was laid out as a food trail from the station to the riverside. The 2027 dates had not been announced as of October 2026. The railway runs to early November, with Ride the Rocket, an evening steam train to the Corwen fireworks, on Saturday 7 November 2026.

Winter

December - February

Christmas trains run on selected dates from Saturday 28 November to Christmas Eve 2026, Christmas Ales from Wales on Saturday 12 December, and Mince Pie Specials on 27 to 31 December 2026 and 1 January 2027. Valle Crucis closes 24 to 26 December and 1 January.

Winter belongs to the railway. Its Christmas trains start on Saturday 28 November 2026 and run on selected dates to Christmas Eve, with Santa in his grotto at Carrog; every 2025 Santa train sold out and the railway has frozen its prices for 2026. There is a Christmas Ales from Wales train on Saturday 12 December, and Mince Pie Specials from 27 December to New Year's Day. The towpath to the Horseshoe Falls is level enough for a cold day, the Corn Mill serves food from noon, and Cadw shuts Valle Crucis on 24, 25 and 26 December and 1 January.
