Discover Dartmouth
Three ferries to Kingswear, a castle at the river mouth, and crab sandwiches on the Embankment
A river town that faces its neighbour
Dartmouth climbs the west bank of the Dart a short way inside the river mouth, with Kingswear opposite and the ferries crossing between them all day. The town grew rich on the wine trade with France, paid for its own castle and an iron chain across the river, and built the timber-framed houses of the Butterwalk and Higher Street.
The Pilgrims' ships called here in 1620, and Dartmouth has been home to the Royal Navy's initial officer training since 1863, now at the college on the hill. Now the river is for ferries, yachts, crabbing lines and, every August, Regatta.
