The mussel shed on the quay, and the reason Conwy has a Protected Designation of Origin food name at all. Conwy Mussels gained protected status in 2016. They are gathered by hand-raking the natural beds of the estuary from small shallow-draft boats known locally as dorys, with the boats limited to under 15 metres so that dredgers cannot work the beds; four families have kept the skill going for over 150 years, and it is said to take five or six seasons to learn to rake properly. Read the current position honestly before planning a meal around them: the Conwy Bay and estuary mussel fishery is closed to mussel fishing from 1 September 2025 to 31 August 2026 under a Welsh Government public notice, and a Welsh Government consultation that ran from 13 July to 11 August 2026 proposed extending that closure to 31 August 2027, with responses still under review. The shed itself is a working business on the quay with listed weekday hours; ring before travelling for mussels specifically.
