Getting to Conwy
How to reach Conwy by train, bus, taxi, car, or bicycle.
Train
Conwy has a station inside the walls and it is not the one you probably want. Conwy (CRS code CNW) sits on the North Wales Main Line between Chester and Holyhead, it is unstaffed, and it is a REQUEST STOP: trains do not call unless you signal the driver from the platform, or tell the conductor on board that you want to get off. It also has a thin service. Llandudno Junction (CRS code LLJ), 1.4km away across the river and a walk of about twenty minutes, is the real interchange for this town: Transport for Wales services on the main line, the Llandudno branch, the Conwy Valley Line to Blaenau Ffestiniog, and Avanti West Coast trains to and from London Euston. The difference is not marginal. Checked live against TransportAPI at 17:36 on 17 August 2026, Conwy returned four departures in the board window and Llandudno Junction returned nineteen. Both codes were confirmed against the live API with real, non-empty results. If you are arriving with luggage, arriving late, or connecting from London, use Llandudno Junction.

- Conwy, CRS code CNW. Inside the walls off Rosemary Lane, unstaffed, served by Transport for Wales only. It is a request stop: put your hand out clearly as the train approaches, and tell the conductor if you want to alight. Verified live against TransportAPI on 2026-08-17, returning real Transport for Wales departures for Holyhead and Manchester Airport.
- Llandudno Junction
- Llandudno Junction, CRS code LLJ, about 1.4km from the walled town over the road bridge, roughly a twenty-minute walk or a two-minute hop by train. The junction for three routes: the North Wales Main Line, the Llandudno branch, and the Conwy Valley Line to Blaenau Ffestiniog. Served by Transport for Wales and by Avanti West Coast for London Euston. Verified live against TransportAPI on 2026-08-17.
- Which To Use
- Use Conwy if you are travelling light, arriving in daylight, and your train is one of the ones that calls. Use Llandudno Junction for anything else: more trains, more destinations, a staffed interchange, and a bridge walk into town that takes you past the castle rather than dropping you behind it.
- Conwy Valley Line
- The Conwy Valley Line runs from Llandudno Junction up the river to Betws-y-Coed and Blaenau Ffestiniog. It is a sparse service, so check the timetable before building a day around it rather than turning up.
- Verification
- Both CRS codes were confirmed against the live TransportAPI station_timetables product on 2026-08-17 with non-empty responses: CNW returned station_name Conwy, LLJ returned station_name Llandudno Junction.
Tips
- •Conwy is a request stop. Signal the driver from the platform, and tell the conductor on board if you want to get off there. Standing and waiting is not enough.
- •Frequency at Conwy varies through the day and is thinner on Sundays. Check the day's Transport for Wales timetable rather than assuming an hourly service.
- •Llandudno Junction is the station to book to if you are connecting from London or carrying bags. The walk in over the bridge is flat and gives you the classic first view of the castle.

Bus
Buses stop inside the walls and are, for a lot of local journeys, more useful than the train. Arriva Buses Wales runs the coastal corridor through Conwy, including service 5 between Llandudno and Bangor, which is the route that connects the town to Llandudno Junction, Llandudno itself and Bangor without a change. Exact route numbers, frequencies and operators change, and this build did not independently verify a current timetable, so plan the specific journey on Traveline Cymru rather than on a remembered route number.

- Arriva Buses Wales operates the Llandudno to Bangor corridor through Conwy, service 5, linking the walled town with Llandudno Junction, Llandudno and Bangor.
- Planning

- Caveat

Tips
- •For Llandudno Junction, the bus is often quicker end to end than waiting for a request-stop train at Conwy.
- •Check Traveline Cymru on the day. North Wales coastal bus timetables change seasonally.

No Conwy taxi firm was independently confirmed during this research pass, so none is named here rather than publishing a number that might not answer. In practice most people arriving without a car use the train to Llandudno Junction and walk, or take the coastal bus. Ask your accommodation for a current local number: in a town this size they will know which firm is actually operating this year.

Driving and Parking
Conwy sits on the A55, the north Wales expressway, which passes under the estuary in the Conwy tunnel rather than over it. Coming from England you leave the A55 at the town; coming up the valley you use the B5106 along the river. Do not try to park inside the walls in summer. The streets are medieval, the through-route is narrow, and Vicarage Gardens, the closest car park to the castle, is capped at two hours and fills first. Park on the edge and walk: Morfa Bach is the big one at 217 spaces, Mount Pleasant is 72 spaces on the western side, and Mill Hill in Gyffin is free, small and sponsored by Conwy Town Council. All the pay-and-display car parks are run by Conwy County Borough Council and the tariffs are seasonal, with a higher August band, so check current rates rather than relying on the figures here.

- Vicarage Gardens car park, 98 spaces including 10 accessible spaces, inside the walls and closest to the castle, but short stay with a two-hour limit and a seasonal tariff that rises in August.
- Mill Hill
- Mill Hill, Gyffin: 25 spaces, free, sponsored at this car park by Conwy Town Council. Small, just south of the walls, and locals know about it.
- Tunnel Traffic
- The A55 through the Conwy tunnel queues in summer and around incidents, which is what turns a half-hour hospital run into an hour. Factor it in rather than trusting a clear-road estimate.
- Tariff Caveat
- Car park tariffs are set by Conwy County Borough Council, are seasonal with a separate August band, and change. Confirm at conwy.gov.uk before travelling.
Tips
- •Aim for Morfa Bach or Mount Pleasant and walk in. Circling Lancaster Square in August is a way to lose twenty minutes.
- •Vicarage Gardens has a two-hour cap, which is less than the castle plus the walls takes, even with the Watch Tower to Wing Gate section of the wall walk closed.
- •Honey Fair day, Seed Fair day and Conwy Half Marathon Sunday all bring road closures. Check before driving into town on those dates.

Cycling
National Cycle Network route 5 runs through Conwy along the north Wales coast, and the National Trust's own directions to Aberconwy House name it as the cycling approach. The flat, useful riding here is the coastal corridor and the estuary side toward Llandudno Junction and Deganwy: Telford's suspension bridge is open to cyclists as well as walkers, which makes crossing the river pleasant rather than a battle with the A547. Inside the walls is a different matter. The streets are narrow, cobbled in places, busy with pedestrians in season, and the climb to the Upper Gate is steep. Lock up and walk. No dedicated cycle-hire scheme in Conwy was independently confirmed during this build.

- River Crossing
- The National Trust's Conwy Suspension Bridge is open to pedestrians and cyclists, which is the civilised way across the river.

- Narrow, uneven and busy in season, with a steep climb to the Upper Gate. Cycling inside the walls is impractical rather than prohibited.

Tips
- •The wall walk is on foot only. Do not plan to take a bike up it.
- •The Sychnant Pass is a genuine climb out of town to the west, not a gentle lane.
