Llandaff Cathedral
About
Two miles up the Taff from the castle, in what still feels like a separate cathedral village, Llandaff Cathedral has stood on one of Britain's oldest Christian sites for some 1,500 years. The building wears its history openly: medieval fabric, Victorian restoration, a landmine's damage from 1941, and the post-war rebuild that inserted Jacob Epstein's monumental aluminium Majestas, Christ in Majesty, on a concrete arch above the nave, one of the boldest artworks in any British cathedral. Free to visit (donations welcome), open 8am to 5:30pm Monday to Saturday and 8am to 4pm Sunday around services. Walk up via Bute Park and Pontcanna Fields on the Taff Trail and the cathedral makes the perfect turnaround point.
