The middle town
The English name is literal. Midleton is the middle town on the road between Cork and Youghal, and it has been trading on that position since Charles II granted it a market charter in 1670. The Irish name is older and points somewhere else entirely: Mainistir na Corann, the monastery at the weir, for the Norman abbey founded here at a weir on the Owenacurra in the 1180s.
What the town is known for now arrived in 1825, when the Murphy brothers put a distillery into a converted woollen mill off Main Street. That site made whiskey until 1975, when production moved next door to the modern plant, and reopened as a visitor attraction in 1992. The town around it kept working: the Saturday market, the shops on Main Street, the 13,906 people counted in the 2022 census.
