The Gap of Dunloe
About
The Gap of Dunloe is a narrow glacial pass that threads between the MacGillycuddy's Reeks and the Purple Mountain, and the classic way to do it is the day-long bus-boat-jaunting-car trip that has run since the Victorians. A coach takes you out to Kate Kearney's Cottage, you cross the pass on foot, by bike or by jaunting car, and an open boat brings you back across the Upper Lake, Muckross Lake and Lough Leane to Ross Castle. Operators such as Gap of Dunloe Tours sell the combined trip; the jaunting-car leg through the pass is usually paid separately in cash to the ponymen.
