Glendalough Itineraries
Half a day or a full weekend. Here are the best ways to spend your time in Glendalough, planned step by step.
Whether you have a few hours or a full weekend to explore, these itineraries give you a local’s route through Glendalough. Each one links directly to the restaurants and activities along the way.
Half a Day in Glendalough: The Monastic City and the Lake
If you only have a morning or afternoon at Glendalough, this covers the essential monastic city, an easy lakeside walk to earn the view, and lunch in Laragh village afterward. It is built around the two things almost every visitor actually wants: the round tower and ruins, and a proper look at the valley itself, without attempting the full Spinc climb.

The monastic city and round tower
Start at the visitor centre for context on St Kevin and how the monastic city worked, then walk out among the ruins: the round tower, the cathedral, St Kevin's Kitchen and the high crosses. Arriving at opening helps you beat the coach crowds that build through late morning.

The Green Road to the Lower Lake
Walk the easy, mostly flat Green Road loop from the ruins down to the shore of the Lower Lake on boardwalk over the wetland. It is a short, achievable walk that delivers a proper view across the water to the mountains without any climbing.

Lunch in Laragh
Drive or walk the short distance into Laragh village for lunch. The Wicklow Heather on the Glendalough Road does a proper sit-down lunch in a warm room with an Irish whiskey bar, or Lynham's of Laragh in the centre of the village is a good walk-in option with a pint.

A Full Day in Glendalough: Round Tower, Ridge and Village
A full day that takes in the three layers of Glendalough: the monastic history at ground level, the valley from height on the Spinc, and the village of Laragh at the end of it for a proper dinner. This is the version of the day that gets past the coach-tour highlights and into the walk that most day-trippers never reach.

The monastic city at opening time
Arrive as the visitor centre opens and walk the round tower, cathedral and churches before the coach traffic builds through mid-morning. This is the quietest the ruins get on a normal day.
View Glendalough Monastic Site & Round Tower - 211:15·3.5 hours
The Spinc and Glenealo Valley loop
Drive or walk up to the Upper Lake car park and take on the full white-route Spinc loop: the stone-step climb past Poulanass Waterfall, the cliff-edge boardwalk above the Upper Lake, and the descent past the old lead-mining ruins in the Glenealo Valley. Proper boots matter on the stone sections.

Wander Laragh village
Drive the short distance into Laragh and stretch your legs around the small village. Glendalough Woollen Mills, at the entrance to the Green Road trail, is worth a look for hand-knitted jumpers and jewellery made on site if you want to bring something home.

Dinner at Lynham's of Laragh
Settle in for the evening at Lynham's of Laragh, the village's traditional pub, bar and restaurant, for a well-earned dinner after the day's climb. It is an easy walk-in option, with Jake's Bar and the Bridge Restaurant both under the one roof.
