Accessibility

Town

Laragh is a small roadside village without a footpath on every stretch; take care walking facing oncoming traffic where there is no path.

Monastic Site

The core monastic-city paths, from the visitor centre to the Round Tower and Cathedral, are mostly flat and hard-surfaced, though some original ground is uneven grass and worn stone. The OPW visitor centre itself is wheelchair accessible; St Kevin's Bed and the ground beyond the Green Road along the Upper Lake shore are not.

Spinc

The Spinc boardwalk and the descent into the Glenealo Valley involve steep stone steps and a cliff-edge boardwalk; it is not suitable for wheelchairs or for anyone with limited mobility.

For venue-level access, contact each place directly. The Green Road around the Lower Lake is the most accessible walking option in the valley.

Emergency Services

General Emergency

112 or 999

Coast Guard

Not applicable. Glendalough's Upper and Lower Lakes are freshwater and non-tidal, not coastal or sea water. For trail and mountain incidents in the valley or on the Spinc, dial 112 or 999 and ask for Mountain Rescue; the Wicklow Mountains are covered by the volunteer Dublin & Wicklow Mountain Rescue Team, coordinated through An Garda Síochána, rather than a unit with its own public phone line.

Garda Station

Rathdrum Garda Station, Station Road, Corballis Lower, Rathdrum, Co. Wicklow, A67 TD45, +353 40 446206.

St Columcille's Hospital, Loughlinstown, Co. Dublin. 24-hour Emergency Department, roughly 40km and about 45 to 55 minutes by road from Glendalough/Laragh via the R755 and N11; this drive time is an estimate from route distance rather than a verified live-traffic figure. Glendalough and Laragh have no hospital or Emergency Department of their own.

Glendalough and Laragh have no GP surgery of their own; the nearest is in Rathdrum, about 8km away. For emergencies dial 112 or 999. The nearest 24-hour Emergency Department is St Columcille's Hospital, Loughlinstown, Co. Dublin, roughly 40km and 45 to 55 minutes away by road.

Wicklow Mountains National Park Duty Ranger (Mon-Fri office hours): 087 980 3899. National Park Information Office, Glendalough: 0404 45425. For a trail or mountain incident, dial 112/999 and ask for Mountain Rescue rather than driving toward a hospital directly; for a minor issue in the village, Rathdrum has GP and pharmacy services but no A&E.
