Doonagore Castle (Viewpoint)
About
Doonagore Castle is the round tower house on the hill above Doolin, a landmark you see from half the village and from the cliff walk. It is a sixteenth-century cylindrical tower, one of only three of its shape in the Burren, restored in the 1970s and now a privately owned holiday home, so it is not open to the public and there is no tour. View it from the roadside or the cliff path rather than the grounds. It has a grim footnote: survivors of a Spanish Armada shipwreck in 1588 are said to have been hanged near here. As a photo stop on the way up to the cliffs it is one of the most photogenic things in Doolin.
