Getting to Donegal Town
How to reach Donegal Town by train, bus, or car.
Train
There is no railway station in Donegal Town. The narrow-gauge County Donegal Railways line that once served the town closed in 1959 and was never reopened, so there is no rail service to or within Donegal Town today; the former station on Tyrconaill Street now houses the Donegal Railway Heritage Centre. The nearest working railway stations are in Sligo, roughly 65km south, and Derry (Waterside), roughly 65km north-east, both on the Iarnrod Eireann or Northern Ireland Railways networks; from either, continue to Donegal Town by bus or taxi.
- Nearest Stations
- Sligo railway station (~65km) or Derry/Waterside railway station (~65km); onward bus or taxi to Donegal Town
- Note
- Donegal Town's own line closed in 1959; the old station building is now the Donegal Railway Heritage Centre
Tips
- •There is no station in Donegal Town; the closest working stations are Sligo or Derry, both roughly an hour and a half away by road.
- •Take the train to Sligo or Derry, then a bus or taxi for the last stretch to Donegal Town.
- •Visit the Donegal Railway Heritage Centre to see what the town's own line looked like before 1959.
Bus & Coach
Donegal Town has no train station, so the bus is the main public-transport way in and out. Bus Eireann's Route 480 runs between Sligo, Donegal Town, Letterkenny and Derry, stopping at the Diamond, and the independent operator Feda O'Donnell runs coaches connecting Donegal Town with Galway, Sligo and other towns. Rural and cross-border frequencies can be limited, so check the current timetable before relying on a tight connection.
- Route480
- Bus Eireann Route 480: Sligo - Donegal Town - Letterkenny - Derry, stopping at the Diamond
- Feda O Donnell
- Feda O'Donnell coaches connect Donegal Town with Galway and Sligo

Tips
- •The Diamond is the main stop for Bus Eireann services through the town.
- •Feda O'Donnell is a useful alternative for Galway and Sligo connections.
- •Confirm the current Bus Eireann and Feda O'Donnell timetables before travelling; a specific stop ID for Donegal Town was not confirmed this pass.
Driving
Donegal Town sits at the junction of the N15, which runs between Sligo and Derry, and the N56, the coast road out toward Killybegs, Kilcar and Slieve League, which makes it a natural stop for anyone driving the Wild Atlantic Way's northern stretch. From Sligo it is around an hour by road; from Letterkenny around 45 minutes; from Derry around an hour and a half. Roads in and out of town are generally good, but the N56 toward Slieve League narrows considerably further west, so allow extra time on that stretch.
- From Sligo
- ~1 hour via the N15
- From Letterkenny
- ~45 minutes via the N15/N13
- From Derry
- ~1 hour 30 minutes via the N15/A5
- Parking
- Mainly on-street around the Diamond and Quay Street, with some off-street car parks; can be tight at midday in summer
Tips
- •Donegal Town is the natural stop where the N15 meets the N56 toward Slieve League; plan a night here before the road narrows further west.
- •Traffic and parking around the Diamond can be tight at midday in summer.
- •Distances and drive times above are estimates based on general road geography and have not been independently re-verified against a live mapping tool this pass; confirm before publishing.
