Tullan Strand, the Peak and the Fairy Bridges in Donegal's southernmost seaside town
A Victorian seaside resort that turned into a surf town
Bundoran, Bun Dobhráin in Irish, the foot of the little water, is the most southerly town in County Donegal and the first one you reach on the N15 coming up from Sligo. Viscount Enniskillen built a summer lodge here in 1777, the railway came in 1866, and the Great Northern Railway's hotel on the headland made it one of Ireland's most popular seaside resorts. The line closed in 1957, but the holiday town it built is still standing: the promenade, the amusements on Main Street, the outdoor sea pools and the big hotels.
What changed is the water. Surfing has turned a season that used to run from Easter to September into a year-round one, the town hosted the European Surfing Championships for the third time in 2011, and Bundoran now calls itself the surf capital of Ireland, with surf schools teaching on Tullan Strand every day of the year. Come for a lesson, walk the Rougey to the Fairy Bridges, swim at the main beach or in the Thrupenny Pool, and stay for a dance at the Allingham if the mood takes you.
