Weather & What to Bring
Weather
Bundoran faces straight out into Donegal Bay and the open Atlantic, so the weather comes in off the sea: mild for the latitude, wet often, and windy more often than not, especially on the headland at Aughrus Point and along Tullan Strand. Summers are cool rather than hot, and winters are mild but stormy, which is exactly when the surf is at its biggest. Showers pass quickly, and a grey morning regularly turns into a clear, bright evening.
Packing Checklist
- ✓Waterproof jacket (essential year-round)
- ✓Layers: temperature can change quickly
- ✓Comfortable walking shoes
- ✓Camera: the views are worth it
- ✓Sunscreen: yes, even in Ireland
Best Time to Visit
March - May
The year starts early here: the Bundoran 10 road race fills the town on the first weekend of March, and the St Patrick's Day parade runs the length of Main Street.
Spring is when Bundoran shakes itself awake. The Bundoran 10, a ten-mile road race with a 5k the night before, takes over the first weekend of March, running out into County Leitrim and back along the Rougey Walk to finish at the main beach. A couple of weeks later the St Patrick's Day parade goes the length of the town from the East End to the West End, and businesses that close for the winter open up for the weekend. The surf schools never stopped, so a lesson on Tullan in a 5mm wetsuit is entirely possible, and Waterworld usually opens its season around Easter. The beaches are quiet, the Rougey is yours, and the light on the bay in the evenings starts to stretch.
June - August
Peak season: Waterworld and the equestrian centre open daily, the lifeguards are on the main beach, and the Bay Swim crosses from Tullan to the pier in August.
July and August are the old Bundoran: families on the main beach, the amusements on Main Street busy into the night, and the surf schools on Tullan running full sessions. Waterworld opens every day in the holidays, the Donegal Equestrian Centre runs its summer season of beach and dune rides, and the lifeguards are on duty at the main beach. The Bundoran Bay Swim, a 2.4 km fundraiser from Tullan Strand to the pier, ran on 8 August in 2026. Book a table at Maddens and Stoked well ahead, because walk-in waits at peak times run to hours, and get to the Tullan Strand car park early on a sunny weekend.
September - November
Autumn is surf season proper, with bigger, cleaner swell on the reefs, and the dancing weekends at the Allingham Arms run on into November.
For surfers the autumn swells are a big part of the appeal, and the competitions follow them: the European Junior Surfing Championships were held at the Peak and Tullan from 24 September to 4 October 2026. On land, the Allingham Arms runs its dancing weekends, with the Mike Denver weekend in early November, and the town is far quieter than in summer. The equestrian centre keeps an autumn season, which in 2026 ran to 1 November. Bring layers for the Rougey: the evenings close in quickly and the headland catches every westerly.
December - February
Winter Bundoran is a town of locals, surfers and storm-watchers; Waterworld is closed, but the surf school runs every day and the Rougey is lit.
Many of the seasonal businesses close, Waterworld is shut until spring, and the town belongs to the people who live here and the surfers who come for the winter swell. That is not a bad thing. The surf school still runs lessons every day of the year in 5/4/3mm wetsuits, the Rougey Walk is lit end to end so you can walk it in the early dark, and a big swell at the Fairy Bridges is a sight worth the wind. The country music keeps going at the weekends. Check opening hours before you travel, because many places cut their days in the off-season.
