Eating and drinking in Birr, and the days that catch people out

A town of 4,726 people should not eat this well, and the awards bear that out rather than just local pride. The thing to understand about eating in Birr is not quality but opening days. Several of the best places open three or four days a week, and a visitor who arrives on a Tuesday and wanders out at seven o'clock expecting choice will be disappointed. Read the days before you plan the evening.

The award winners

Sanjay's Kitchen on Market Square is the name locals give first. Sanjay Vishwakarma's kitchen took Best Restaurant in Offaly at the Irish Restaurant Awards in March 2025, and in May 2026 the Offaly Independent reported him collecting Best World Cuisine for Leinster at the same awards. It is a small, busy town-centre room and it fills at weekends, so go early. There is no website: the restaurant runs through its Facebook page, which is where hours and closures are posted.

Hackett's Eatery is the dining room on the first floor of the County Arms, the Georgian house on Railway Road that was built in 1809 as a private home called Moorpark House and has been the town's hotel since 1962. Executive Head Chef Gerry O'Riordan runs a seasonal menu and the terrace looks over the hotel's walled garden. The hotel lists it as winner of Best Hotel and Guesthouse Restaurant at the Irish Restaurant Awards 2026 Leinster regional awards, and a finalist in the Gold Medal Awards 2025. Here is the catch: the hotel's own page gives opening times as Thursday, Friday, Saturday and bank holiday Sundays from 5pm to 9pm. There is an early bird between 5pm and 6.30pm. Book on the hotel's reservations page or by phone on 057 9120791, and check the days before you build an evening around it.

The pubs that feed you

Kelly's Bar on the Green sits within about a hundred metres of both the castle gate and Emmet Square, which makes it the obvious stop after a morning in the demesne. Four generations of the Kelly family have run it for over 140 years and it is currently father and son, John and Eoin. Head chef Sam brings a Mediterranean streak to a menu that runs from pub classics to an a la carte list. There is a trad session on Thursday nights and bands at weekends, and it is dog friendly. It is also the official stockist of Birr Castle Irish Whiskey, a single pot still bottled at 46 per cent, matured in bourbon oak and finished in Oloroso sherry and rum casks, sold by the glass or the bottle. Pub hours are posted on their site; restaurant hours vary and the pub asks you to phone.

The Thatch in Crinkill is two kilometres south of town and worth the drive. It has always been thatched, it has been in the same family for close to two hundred years, and older locals still call it Mother Walsh's. A restaurant was added in 1995 and it is now the most ambitious kitchen in the immediate area, run by executive head chef Tom Egan. Watch the days: closed Tuesdays, bar only on Monday nights, and Sunday service runs in set sittings.

The Coach House Bar at Dooly's on Emmet Square is the most central sit-down in town, with the Bianconi Courtyard for outdoor dining and live music on Saturdays.

Daytime

The Stables Tea Rooms are in the original drawing room of a Georgian house on Oxmantown Mall, directly opposite Birr Theatre and next to the main gates of the demesne, which makes them the natural stop either side of a castle visit. Breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea. Closed Mondays, open Tuesday to Friday 9.30am to 5pm, Saturday 9.30am to 5.30pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm. No online booking; walk in.

Inside the demesne, the seasonal Courtyard Cafe opens daily from 10.00, weather permitting, which is useful if you have a day ticket and do not want to come back out through the gate. Woodfield, a garden centre with a cafe on the Tullamore road about two kilometres north, does breakfast and lunch from local produce.

Something different

Townsend House on Townsend Street runs a tapas menu and a wine list in the front rooms of a Georgian guest house. It is evening only and the week is short: closed Monday to Wednesday, Thursday from 6pm, Friday and Saturday from 5pm, Sunday and bank holiday Monday from 4pm. Reserve through the booking form on the guest house's own site, because it books out on festival weekends. Martin and Lorraine also take overnight guests, and the house describes itself as the only Failte Ireland approved and registered guest house in Birr.

The short version

If you are in Birr on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday you have the run of the town. Sunday and Monday are thinner and Tuesday is thinnest, with The Thatch closed and Hackett's shut. On those nights Sanjay's, Kelly's and Dooly's are the reliable options. Prices move, so treat any figure here as indicative and check with the venue.
