Birr's festival year, month by month

For a town of under five thousand people, Birr runs an unusual number of festivals, and they are not a recent tourism invention. Vintage Week has been going since 1968. The Birr Festivals Collective now covers music, film, children's arts, playwriting and the big August festival, and most of it is anchored on one building: Birr Theatre and Arts Centre on Oxmantown Mall, the restored Oxmantown Hall of 1888.

What follows is the year as it actually runs. Dates given are the most recent editions each organiser published. Confirm the next edition on the organiser's own site rather than an events aggregator, because aggregators carry last year's dates forward and that is how people end up in an empty town.

Spring: the May bank holiday

Birr Festival of Music was founded in 2016 and takes the May bank holiday weekend every year, spread across the town's historic venues. The 2026 edition, its tenth, ran from Thursday 30 April to Monday 4 May. The programme mixes concerts with pop-up events, music in local schools, masterclasses and community outreach, and the artist list is serious: the RTE Concert Orchestra, the Irish Chamber Orchestra, Contempo Quartet, Crash Ensemble, Finghin Collins and Paula Murrihy have all played it. Two year-round strands run out of it: the Trench Award, which supports emerging classical singers and instrumentalists from the midlands and is in its fourteenth year, and Birr Young Voices, a choir for children aged eight to fifteen that has drawn from fourteen local schools since 2017.

Spring is also when the demesne gardens do their serious work. Snowdrops under the hornbeam cloister that Anne, Countess of Rosse, planted in 1936, then crocus, then the magnolias, then rhododendron and the lilac avenue. The wisteria on the upper terrace usually opens from mid-May and is over a hundred years old.

Summer: the one you plan around

Birr Vintage Week and Arts Festival is the town's own festival and the busiest week of its year. It began in 1968 as a celebration of Birr's Georgian heritage and all things vintage, and it now runs nine days with visual art, theatre, music, street theatre, pop-up performers, workshops, exhibitions, parade days, market and pub events, alongside a large community programme. The organisers describe it as one of the longest running festivals of its kind in Ireland. The 2026 edition ran from Friday 31 July to Saturday 8 August. Book accommodation early for it, because the town does not have much slack.

Summer is also the only season the castle interior opens. In 2026 the Guided Castle Tour ran 15 May to 5 September, Monday to Saturday, fifteen people per tour, 22 euro per person including general admission, pre-booking essential. If you want inside the house, that is the window.

Autumn: film, then children

OFFline Film Festival is Offaly's film festival and is based at Birr Theatre. Its 17th edition ran from 7 to 11 October 2026. Three strands: a filmmaking challenge in which teams from Ireland and abroad make a short film in three days, with the winner going on to the Galway Film Fleadh; workshops and masterclasses with people working in the industry; and screenings of new Irish and international films and documentaries. There is an animation day. The festival grew out of FilmOffaly, and the first film made under its bursary scheme was directed by Domhnall Gleeson and featured his father Brendan.

Hullabaloo, Offaly's children's arts festival, takes the Halloween mid-term break, with workshops and live performances across music, craft, art, dance, film making, story writing and puppetry. The 2026 edition ran Wednesday 28 to Saturday 31 October. Over the same stretch, Birr Castle Demesne ran its own Witch's Magic Trail for ages four and up, a Halloween train and clue trail through the grounds, from 24 to 31 October.

Out in the demesne, autumn is the best walking of the year. The Red Tree Trail covers 65 specimen trees over about five kilometres, and the Magnolia delavayi on the castle terraces, planted around 1912, flowers in September and October, which is late enough that the estate flags it specially.

Winter: trains and wreaths

The Birr Castle Christmas Express runs from late November through December: a train through the lit winter grounds and into the castle to meet Santa and Mrs Claus, with cookies and festive activities, about sixty minutes. In 2026 it ran on 28 and 29 November, then 4 to 6, 11 to 13 and 17 to 22 December, with adults 13 and over at 22 euro, children from 12 months to 12 years at 28 euro including a gift, and infants at 10 euro. A calmer sensory-friendly session ran on 27 November. It is not wheelchair accessible, because the castle is a listed building. Alongside it, a Christmas wreath workshop led by the floral designer Richard Haslam, using foliage cut from the castle gardens, ran on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 November at 80 euro per person.

Birr Theatre programmes film and touring drama through the dark months, and the seven galleries of Ireland's Historic Science Centre carry a wet afternoon better than anything else in the town.
