Kilmurvy Blue Flag Beach

About

Kilmurvy Beach, at Cill Mhuirbhigh below Dún Aonghasa, is Inis Mór's Blue Flag beach, a sheltered sandy bay that is the obvious place to swim on the island, with lifeguard cover in season and calmer water than the exposed open-Atlantic sides of Inis Mór. It sits right on the coast road out to the fort, so it pairs naturally with a Dún Aonghasa visit, either as a cooldown after the climb or a stop on the cycle out. The beach faces Galway Bay rather than the open ocean, which is part of why it is sheltered enough to swim.

Highlights

  • Blue Flag status with seasonal lifeguard cover
  • Sheltered sandy bay facing Galway Bay rather than the open Atlantic
  • Right on the coast road to Dún Aonghasa
  • A genuine swimming option, unusual for the island

Tips

  • Lifeguard cover, where provided, is seasonal; check current dates before swimming outside summer.
  • The water is Atlantic-cold even in August; a wetsuit extends your comfortable time in.
  • Combine with Dún Aonghasa or Man of Aran Crafts & Café, both close by.
