About

The yellow boats on the harbourside, and the cheapest way to see why the abbey is where it is. The standard short trip runs 20 minutes out along the coast towards Sandsend and back, leaving from Brewery Steps on the harbourside from 10:15 each morning at five pounds a head with under-fives free, and you board by walking on rather than booking. The operator also runs longer sea trips on Summer Queen and Esk Belle III, river tours up the Esk on Dash II, and separate sea-fishing trips. Twenty minutes is enough: the harbour mouth from the water, the piers from outside, and the cliffs the town sits between.

Highlights

  • Twenty minutes out towards Sandsend and back for £5 per person
  • The abbey and the piers seen from the water, which is the view they were built for
  • River trips up the Esk on Dash II as an alternative to going out to sea
  • No booking needed for the short sailings; you walk aboard

Tips

  • Board at Brewery Steps on the lower harbourside. First sailing of the day is around 10:15.
  • Short trips run daily in season and are weather-dependent, so a rough day means no boats.
  • Longer sea trips and fishing trips are booked separately through the operator; the £5 fare is for the 20-minute sailing only.
