A youth hostel in Abbey House on the East Cliff, sharing the headland with the abbey ruin, so you wake up on the clifftop rather than down among the harbour streets. Rooms range from dormitories to private family rooms, and the location is the whole argument: the abbey is next door, St Mary's and the top of the 199 steps are a two-minute walk, and the Cleveland Way starts from the door. The trade is that everything else, the harbour, the shops and the restaurants, is 199 steps below you, and you will do that climb at the end of every evening.
