A Whitby jet jeweller on Church Street, trading under the line The Original Whitby Jet Store and dating its establishment to 1860, which puts it in the middle of the Victorian mourning-jewellery boom that made this stone famous. Genuine Whitby jet is fossilised wood from the Early Jurassic Jet Rock in the shales along this coast, and it is not interchangeable with the black glass, onyx and moulded resin that gets sold as jet in seaside shops. Buying from an established Church Street jeweller is the practical way to be sure of what you are getting; asking to see the piece under a loupe is not rude here, it is expected.
