Stirling sits inland on the River Forth. The castle esplanade and the Wallace Monument's top gallery are exposed, so they can feel colder and windier than the streets below.

  • ✓Layers: temperature can change quickly
  • ✓Comfortable walking shoes
  • ✓Camera: the views are worth it
  • ✓Sunscreen: yes, even in United Kingdom

Best Time to Visit

Spring

March - May

The Holy Rude reopened to visitors on 25 March in 2026 (2027 date not yet announced), Cambuskenneth Abbey opens on 1 April, and the castle moves to its 18:00 summer closing on 1 April.

Spring is when the Top of Town comes back to life. The Church of the Holy Rude opened to visitors on 25 March in 2026, and its 2027 date had not been announced as of October 2026. Historic Environment Scotland opens Cambuskenneth Abbey on 1 April and moves Stirling Castle to its summer hours, 9:30 to 18:00, the same day. The youth hostel on St John Street opens from March. The Back Walk is easier before the trees are in full leaf, and you can see the old town wall more clearly. Check each 2027 opening date before you travel.

Summer

June - August

Book the castle and the Wallace Monument online. The Stirling Highland Games are announced for Saturday 21 August 2027.

Summer is the castle's busy season, and Historic Environment Scotland charges less for tickets bought online than at the gate. The Wallace Monument asks visitors to book online to secure an entry time. Cambuskenneth Abbey, across the river, is open daily until 30 September and is free. The organisers have announced the Stirling Highland Games for Saturday 21 August 2027 at Stirling Sports Village, with heavy events, Highland dancing and a traders' village.

Autumn

September - November

The Bannockburn visitor centre closed on 1 October 2026 until mid-2028, but the grounds stay open. The castle shuts at 17:00 from 1 October and the Holy Rude closes for the season on 1 November.

Autumn starts with Bloody Scotland, the crime writing festival, which ran from 18 to 20 September in 2026. On 1 October the castle moved to winter hours, closing at 17:00, and Cambuskenneth Abbey closed until April. The Bannockburn visitor centre closed the same day for a refurbishment, and the National Trust for Scotland expects it to reopen in mid-2028. The rotunda, the statue of Robert the Bruce and the grounds stay open. The Holy Rude's visitor season ends on Sunday 1 November 2026. The monthly market on Port Street runs on 24 October and 14 November.

Winter

December - February

The castle stays open all winter, 9:30 to 17:00, except 25 and 26 December. Port Street has markets on 28 November, 12 December and 19 December 2026.

Winter is the indoor half of Stirling. The castle stays open daily until 17:00, with shorter hours on Christmas Eve and a late start on New Year's Day. It closes on 25 and 26 December. The Smith on Dumbarton Road is free and keeps its Tuesday to Sunday week. The coffee shop at Cowane's Hospital opens every day. The Port Street market has three dates before Christmas in 2026: 28 November, 12 December and 19 December. The council had not published its festive programme when this was written, so check stirling.gov.uk for the lights switch-on.
