One of the oldest golf courses in the world still played over its original ground, running west along the shore from the town on land that walkers cross on the way to the beach. The West Links is a genuine old-style links: stone walls in play, blind shots, and the 15th, the hole that gave the world the Redan and has been copied on courses on every continent since. Visitors are welcome six days a week, with Saturday reserved as a members' day, and the club takes bookings directly through its own site. It is a serious golf destination rather than a resort course, and it is busy: book well ahead in summer.
