Accessibility
Town
The High Street, Quality Street and the seafront are largely level and easy underfoot. The harbour itself is uneven stone and slipway. North Berwick Law is a genuine hill walk with rough, steep and often slippery ground near the top and is not accessible. Tantallon Castle sits on a clifftop with uneven ruined ground and stairs; Dirleton Castle has a timber bridge and uneven ground inside.
Station
North Berwick railway station is rated step-free category A by National Rail, with step-free access to the platform, accessible toilets and a Changing Places toilet.
Museum
The Coastal Communities Museum is on the first floor above the library with lift access, level access once on the floor, a portable hearing loop, and a Changing Places toilet with adult changing on the ground floor. It has a detailed AccessAble guide.
The Scottish Seabird Centre states wheelchair access throughout and accessible parking adjacent to the building. Bass Rock landing trips involve a boat transfer onto bare rock and are not suitable for limited mobility; the catamaran cruise is the gentler option. Contact operators directly before booking.

Coast Guard
999, then ask for the Coastguard. North Berwick has an RNLI lifeboat station at the harbour. The rocks and reefs at both bays cover fast on a rising tide and the Firth has strong tidal streams around the islands.
Police Station
Police Scotland covers North Berwick as part of East Lothian. Phone 101 for non-emergencies and 999 or 112 in an emergency. Do not count on walking into a station here: Police Scotland confirmed in February 2025 that it is disposing of the North Berwick police station building, along with Dunbar and Prestonpans, saying local policing and response are unaffected and that officers hold community drop-in sessions at locations including the Tesco store in the town.
Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, 51 Little France Crescent, Old Dalkeith Road, Edinburgh, EH16 4SA. This is the nearest 24-hour Accident and Emergency department, roughly 30 km west of North Berwick. There is no A&E in East Lothian. East Lothian Community Hospital in Haddington, about 12 km away, is a community hospital without an A&E department; out of hours it hosts the East Lothian Primary Care Emergency Centre, which you reach by phoning NHS 24 on 111 rather than by turning up. In a life-threatening emergency phone 999 and wait for the ambulance rather than driving.

East Lothian Primary Care Emergency Centre

Operates 18:00 to midnight on weekdays and 08:00 to midnight at weekends, and is accessed by phoning NHS 24 on 111 first, not by walking in. About 12 km from North Berwick. East Lothian Community Hospital is a community hospital: it does not have an Accident and Emergency department.
NHS Lothian is the health board for East Lothian. NHS 24 handles urgent but non-emergency medical advice on 111, free and 24 hours a day, and it is also how you access out-of-hours care. Scotland's rules differ from England's: NHS prescriptions are free at the point of use for everyone, and Police Scotland is a single national force rather than a county constabulary.
Golf
The North Berwick Golf Club (West Links)

One of the oldest links in the world still played on its original ground, and famous for the 15th, the original 'Redan'. Visitors are welcome six days a week; Saturday is a members' day. Book through the club.

The town's other links, on the headland east of the harbour, with clifftop views across the Firth to the Bass Rock. Generally the more relaxed and more affordable of the two for a visiting golfer, with a clubhouse restaurant open to non-players.
Parking

This is the single thing most likely to catch a visitor out in 2026. East Lothian Council introduced parking management across North Berwick with enforcement starting on 1 June 2026, and the rollout was widely reported as confusing in its first days: the East Lothian Courier reported on 2 June 2026 that the council had published a fresh summary of the rules, acknowledged that some parking sign information was incorrect and was being corrected, and quoted drivers unaware that the free 45 minutes on the High Street still requires you to enter your registration at the machine. The machines do not issue paper tickets. Read the signs on the specific street you are parked on, enter your registration whether or not you are paying, and check the council's own North Berwick parking scheme page for the current tariffs. Harbour car park, beside the Scottish Seabird Centre

Tariff as published by the Scottish Seabird Centre for the car park adjacent to the Centre. Blue Badge spaces are available next to the Centre. It is small and fills early on a summer weekend.

The Scottish Seabird Centre points visitors here as a free alternative, roughly a 15 minute walk from the harbour. Other town-centre car parks include the Imperial, Kirk Ports and Glebe car parks, all inside the controlled parking area.
