Llangollen for visitors: the nearest station, the buses, prescriptions and the nearest A&E

Ruabon or Chirk, which bus to catch, where the nearest emergency department is, the minor injuries service in town, and how free prescriptions in Wales work for visitors from England.

By TravelPlan.guide·

Llangollen is close to the English border, and two practical things work differently on this side of it: there is no mainline station in town, and the prescription rules are Welsh.

Ruabon or Chirk

The station on Abbey Road is the heritage railway's. The two nearest national stations are both on Transport for Wales's Shrewsbury to Chester line:

  • Chirk (CRK) is the closer as the crow flies, about 8.1km south-east of Llangollen Bridge by our map points. The Eisteddfod's travel page calls it a short taxi ride.
  • Ruabon (RUA) is about 8.7km east, and it is the one with a bus. Arriva's 5 and 5C run Wrexham, Ruabon, Llangollen every 30 minutes, per the Eisteddfod's travel page. The stop bustimes.org lists as "Ruabon, after Station Road" is on Bridge Street, about 150 metres from the station in a straight line, and the TrawsCymru T3 calls there too.

The Eisteddfod puts either station about 15 minutes away by car. The heritage railway lists two Llangollen taxi firms, Castle Taxis (07904 276580) and Premier Taxis (01978 861999). For anything with luggage on a Sunday, check the bus before you commit to Ruabon.

The buses that matter

The 5 is the everyday link. The 5C and 5CY go by Cefn Mawr, Acrefair and Trevor, which is the aqueduct side of the valley. TrawsCymru's T3, run by Lloyds Coaches, links Wrexham and Barmouth through Llangollen, and since 29 June 2025, Transport for Wales says, every T3 journey calls at the Maelor Hospital in Wrexham. Traveline Cymru has the timetables.

If something goes wrong

For an emergency, call 999 or 112. The nearest emergency department is at Wrexham Maelor Hospital, Croesnewydd Road, Wrexham LL13 7TD; NHS 111 Wales lists it as open 24 hours, with the department's number as 03000 847847. For urgent advice that is not life-threatening, NHS 111 Wales is free on 111, day and night.

Llangollen Health Centre, on Bishops Walk, LL20 8RZ (01978 860625), is not an emergency department. The Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board lists a minor injuries service there on weekdays, Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5pm. A petition asking for a fully funded minor injury unit at the centre was before the Senedd's Petitions Committee in March 2026, so that service may change. Rowlands Pharmacy is at the health centre; check its hours before you go.

Prescriptions: the Welsh rule

Prescriptions have been free in Wales since 1 April 2007, but the rule is about where you are registered and who wrote the prescription, not just where you collect it. GOV.WALES says anyone registered with a Welsh GP who gets their prescription from a Welsh pharmacist is covered. People who live in Wales but are registered with a GP in England get an entitlement card so that their English prescriptions are dispensed free here. A visitor from England, registered with an English GP and carrying an English prescription, has neither, so expect to pay the charge at a Llangollen pharmacy unless you hold an exemption.

Parking

Denbighshire County Council runs the pay and display car parks in town, among them Market Street, Brook Street, East Street, Hall Street and Mill Street, with charges amended from 6 July 2026. The heritage railway and the Eisteddfod both point drivers to the Llangollen Pavilion car park on Abbey Road. For the aqueduct, the Canal & River Trust's car parks at Trevor are pay and display from 8am to 8pm and are locked outside those hours.
