44 Lion Street, Hay-on-Wye, HR3 5AA
The big one on Lion Street. The building went up in 1886 as Robert Williams and Sons, the town's agricultural stores, and Richard Booth moved his bookselling in here in 1982, building what the shop's own history calls miles of shelving; he sold the business in 2007 and died in 2019. Today it spreads over three floors: literature, theology, science and art upstairs, new fiction, nature, children's books and craft supplies on the ground floor, and romance, comics and manga in the basement, with new and second-hand stock on the same shelves. The shop's own cinema is round the corner on Brook Street.
