The Old Black Lion
26 Lion Street, Hay-on-Wye, HR3 5AD
About
A 17th-century inn in a Grade II listed building on Lion Street; its own site places it at the old Lion Gate into town and repeats the house story that Oliver Cromwell stayed here while the Roundheads besieged Hay Castle. The à la carte is seasonal and built on local ingredients, with simpler suppers on Monday and Tuesday evenings, and the inn says it has been a Good Food Award winner for gastro pubs two years running. Friday is jazz night, from 8.30pm in the restaurant. The inn notes that its days are subject to change.
