A grand Victorian railway hotel forming the front of Glasgow Central station itself, built in 1883 and extended in the early 1900s, with a genuine claim to broadcasting history: the world's first long-distance television pictures were transmitted here by John Logie Baird in 1927. Closed in 2009 over structural concerns, restored and reopened as the Grand Central in 2010, and now operating as an IHG voco property. The location cannot be beaten for a rail-first visit: you can walk from the platform straight into the lobby.
