Betws-y-Coed Right Now

Betws is sheltered, but the mountains to the west make its weather. A dry morning in the village can still mean cloud on Yr Wyddfa and a full, fast river under Pont-y-Pair, so check the mountain forecast before heading up to Pen-y-Pass and keep off the rocks when the Llugwy is high.

Two rivers, three bridges and the A5

Betws-y-Coed grew up on Telford's Holyhead road. The A5 still runs through the middle of the village as Holyhead Road, past the Royal Oak, a former Victorian coaching inn, and over Waterloo Bridge, the cast-iron span Telford designed across the Conwy in 1815 and 1816. Cadw lists the bridge Grade I.

The village is mostly a base for what is around it. Natural Resources Wales starts its Llyn Elsi Walk into the Gwydir Forest Park behind St Mary's Church, the waterfalls on the Llugwy and the Conwy are a few kilometres out in either direction, and the Conwy Valley trains and the Sherpa'r Wyddfa buses both call at the station.
