About
The road bridge over the Wye at the bottom of Bridge Street. The Derbyshire Historic Environment Record quotes the listing: Grade I, about 1300, widened in the 19th century, ashlar sandstone, five pointed arches with ribbed undersides, and triangular cutwaters that rise to form pedestrian refuges, with the base of a cross on the downstream side. It is also a scheduled monument. The same record notes a suggestion that the bridge may be later than thought, possibly 18th century, because no stone bridge is mentioned before a 1713 Quarter Sessions entry, so its age is not settled. Either way it is the place in town to sit by the water: the riverside path upstream from the bridge is where people eat their puddings and watch the ducks.
