The Rutland Arms Hotel
The Square, Bakewell, Derbyshire DE45 1BT
About
The big sandstone coaching inn that faces down the Square, with the war memorial in front. The hotel's own history page says it was built in 1804 for the 5th Duke of Rutland, had stables for up to 60 horses, and was run by the Greaves family for nearly a century; it repeats the story that the Bakewell pudding began here as a cook's mistake around 1860, and calls the idea that Jane Austen stayed in 1811 a debated connection. It now belongs to The Coaching Inn Group. The hotel counts 32 rooms across the main house and the courtyard mews, including an accessible twin in the courtyard, and welcomes dogs; phone ahead for a dog-friendly room or table. Rooms book on the hotel's own site.
