Aber for visitors: Welsh on the signs, prescriptions, parking and the gulls

Aberystwyth is a Welsh town with a lot of English visitors and English students, and it has been more anglicised than the county round it since it grew as a Victorian seaside resort. Welsh is still on the signs, and in the cliff railway's name. A visitor getting a name wrong is not a problem in Aber.

How to say it

Aberystwyth: English speakers say ab-er-IST-with. The Welsh pronunciation, per the standard IPA, is nearer ab-er-UST-with. Most residents say Aber. Rheidol, the river that gives the railway its name, starts with a breathy Rh, roughly HRAY-dol. Llanbadarn Fawr, the village beside the campus, starts with the Welsh Ll, a breathy L that English speakers approximate as thl, then bad-arn VOWR. Penparcau, south of the harbour, is pen-PAR-kai. These are approximations from the IPA. Ask a local and listen.

Welsh language and the town

The Welsh Language Society, Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg, held its first protest on Trefechan Bridge, by the harbour, on 2 February 1963. The National Library of Wales runs its website in Welsh and English. Signs are bilingual, and the cliff railway is Rheilffordd y Graig on the fascia above the door.

Prescriptions in Wales are free, but only in a particular way. If a prescriber in Wales issues it, for example a GP you are registered with in Wales, it is free at a pharmacy in Wales. A prescription issued in England and handed in at a Welsh pharmacy is charged, unless you are exempt, according to GOV.WALES and the NHS Business Services Authority. Bring your medication and the paperwork. Boots on Terrace Road is open Sundays, 10:00 to 16:00, according to NHS 111 Wales, and Well is inside the Church Surgery on Portland Street. Bronglais Hospital's Emergency Department on Caradog Road is listed as open 24 hours. NHS 111 Wales, free, is 111.

Parking

Seafront on-street parking on Victoria Terrace, Marine Terrace and New Promenade is charged from 08:00 to 20:00 daily since 18 May 2026, and the county council's fees list 2 hours at £3.50 and 4 hours at £5.00. Its pay and display car parks, such as Park Avenue, North Road and New Promenade, are £4.00 for 2 hours, £5.00 for 4 hours and £7.00 for 24 hours. The National Library has a free car park, and the Arts Centre's is free evenings and weekends. Blue Badge holders are exempt.

Getting here

By train, Aberystwyth is the end of the line from Shrewsbury by way of Machynlleth, and some services run through to Birmingham International. The station and bus station are side by side on Alexandra Road. Check Transport for Wales for disruption before you leave. TrawsCymru buses run from here to Carmarthen (the T1) and to Bangor (the T2).

By electric car

The National Library has 40 charge points, 10 at 75kW and 30 at 22kW by its own count, and Park Lodge Hotel at Llanbadarn Fawr has six Tesla Superchargers.

The gulls

They take chips. The Town Council issues gull-proof bags to residents. Keep the fish and chips in the paper until you have found a wall.
