Whether you have a few hours off the DART or a full weekend to explore, these itineraries give you a local’s route through Waterford. Each one links directly to the restaurants and activities along the way.

Viking Triangle Half Day

The shortest route through Waterford's medieval core: Reginald's Tower, the Medieval Museum, the Bishop's Palace, and a stop at the House of Waterford Crystal heritage workshop. Walking distance throughout.

    Start at Reginald's Tower

    Buy the Freedom of Waterford Pass (€23) at the Tower or online. Spend 45 minutes in the two-floor exhibition on Viking Waterford and the original gold and silver finds.

    Walk five minutes to the Medieval Museum

    Cross to Cathedral Square. The Medieval Museum covers Norman and medieval Waterford, including the Great Charter Roll of 1373 and the Cloth-of-Gold Vestments.

    Lunch at Bodéga or The Reg

    Bodéga on John Street is two minutes' walk for Mediterranean casual; The Reg on the Mall is opposite Reginald's Tower if you want to stay in the Triangle.

    Bishop's Palace then House of Waterford Crystal

    Bishop's Palace covers Georgian Waterford and houses the oldest surviving piece of Waterford Crystal. Then walk five minutes along the Mall to the House of Waterford Crystal heritage workshop for a 50-minute guided tour through the cutting and engraving floors.

Greenway Day Cycle

Cycle the full 46km Waterford Greenway one-way to Dungarvan with a shuttle bike collection. Suits a moderately fit rider; pace is unhurried with two food stops along the way.

    Hire bikes at Bilberry trailhead

    Walk or taxi 1km west of the city centre to the Bilberry trailhead. Bike hire from around €25/day with helmets and panniers; arrange one-way drop-off in Dungarvan when booking.

    Cycle west toward Kilmacthomas

    First 25km of trail through Kilmeaden and over the Kilmacthomas viaduct. The Workhouse Café at the Kilmacthomas station building is the natural lunch stop.

    Lunch at the Workhouse Café

    On-site café in the restored Kilmacthomas station building. Soup, sandwiches, and coffee.

    Continue west through the Ballyvoyle tunnel

    The 400m Ballyvoyle tunnel is the most photographed point on the trail. The route then opens to Atlantic views as you approach Dungarvan.

    Return shuttle from Dungarvan

    Drop bikes at the operator's Dungarvan depot. Most operators run a shuttle van back to Bilberry on a fixed schedule; some include in the hire price.

Winterval Weekend

A weekend during the Winterval festival programme. Mid-November to 23 December, Friday to Sunday programming. Combines the Christmas market with two of the Viking Triangle museums and a carol concert.

    InterCity train from Heuston pulls into Plunkett by mid-afternoon. Check into the Tower Hotel or Granville for shortest walk to the Triangle.

    Wander the stalls, mulled wine, fairy lights. The market opens daily through December.

    Winterval programmes one or two carol concerts most weekends in the Cathedral. Free or low-priced tickets via the Winterval site.
