Shenick Island & Martello Tower
← All things to do
About
The closest of the Skerries islands, Shenick is a tied island you can walk out to across the sand at the lowest spring tides, with a Napoleonic-era Martello tower at its centre. It is a genuinely special short adventure, but the tide turns fast and the crossing floods, so it is only for the lowest tides and only with a careful eye on the time. Check the tide tables, tell someone your plan, and turn back well before the water returns. From the shore it is a fine wildlife spot in its own right.
Highlights
- ✓Napoleonic Martello tower on the island
- ✓Low-tide walk across the sand
- ✓Seabirds and a quiet wildlife spot
- ✓Views back to the town and out to the islands
Tips
- →Only attempt the crossing at the lowest spring tides
- →The tide turns fast and floods the crossing; watch the time
- →Check tide tables and tell someone your plan
- →If in any doubt, enjoy it from the South Strand instead
