On the water in Killaloe: cruise, paddle, swim and Holy Island
What you can actually do on Lough Derg from the twin towns, with prices, seasons and the honest caveats.
Killaloe is a boating town before it is anything else. The foot of Lough Derg is a short way upriver from the bridge, and there is a canal running along the Clare bank. Waterways Ireland calls Lough Derg Ireland's quintessential pleasure lake and counts over 160km of indented shoreline. You do not need to own a boat to use it. Here is what you can actually do from the twin towns, from the gentlest option to the most effort.
The one-hour cruise
Killaloe River Cruises has been running trips here since 1991, when James Whelan started with an open boat for four. Today the family runs the Spirit of Killaloe, lengthened to carry eighty, from Lakeside Drive in Ballina, Co. Tipperary, across the bridge from Killaloe. The cruise is an hour: north up the Shannon past the canal and Béal Ború and into the calm water at the foot of the lake, with commentary all the way.
- Prices on the operator's page in October 2026: adult €17, child €7.50, senior €14.50, family of four €44, family of five €49.
- Times are published only on the booking calendar, so check there rather than turning up.
- Rain is not a reason to cancel. The lower deck is enclosed and heated and there is a bar.
- Dogs are welcome, and there is a ramp for wheelchairs and buggies up to 60cm wide.
The operator advises booking online in advance in season. Meet at Eircode V94 A402 ten minutes before departure; there is free parking.
Paddling the Blueway
The Killaloe Canal is the sheltered start for two of the Lough Derg Blueway's paddling trails. Waterways Ireland says the Blueway has 21 easy-to-follow paddling journeys around the lake.
The Killaloe loop, 2.5km
Out of the canal, under the old bridge, onto the Shannon and back. The Blueway rates it for guided beginner groups and independent intermediate paddlers.
Upriver to Béal Ború, 5km
Under the bridge and up the Shannon, past the site of Brian Ború's fort, at the same rating.
Read the rating carefully: neither route is billed for beginners on their own. The canal is still water; the river is open water. Wear a buoyancy aid and remember that the lake is cold for most of the year.
A practical warning about hire. Older listings name a kayak tour company and a stand-up paddleboard school in Killaloe. When we checked in October 2026, one company's web address had become a parked page offering the domain for sale and the other's domain no longer resolved, so we could not confirm either is trading. Arrange hire and lessons before you travel and confirm them directly, rather than assuming you can pick up a board at the canal.
A swim at Ballycuggaran
About 4.6km north of the bridge on the R463, on the Clare shore, Ballycuggaran is a lawn sloping down to a jetty and a short beach. It held a Blue Flag for the 2026 bathing season, which ran 1 June to 15 September, and Waterways Ireland says it is lifeguard patrolled in the summer season. Outside those weeks there is no cover. Mountshannon, further up the shore, also had a Blue Flag for 2026.
Out to Holy Island
The half-day that makes a trip. Drive about 23km north to Mountshannon Pier and take Gerard Madden's boat to Inis Cealtra, the monastic island with its round tower and six ruined churches. His site says boats and guided tours run daily, weather permitting, from April to the end of September, with no pre-booking needed. Lough Derg eBike Tours quotes the boat fare at €20, paid to the boat operator; the operator's own site does not publish a fare.
If you would rather ride than drive, Lough Derg eBike Tours runs a four-hour guided Inis Cealtra tour from Killaloe Hotel & Spa: 48km along the western shore with no major climbs, about an hour on the island, a maximum of six riders, priced on the operator's tour page with the boat fare paid separately, and booked by close of business the day before.
When the lake says no
The Holy Island boats sail weather permitting, and the eBike operator warns that the sailing is more weather dependent than the cycling. If a crossing is off, the river cruise still goes in rain under cover, and the Lakeside Hotel in Ballina has an 18-metre pool and a 40-metre water slide. St Flannan's Cathedral, by the canal, is open daily and is a good half hour out of the rain.
Seasons in short

- April to September: Holy Island boats from Mountshannon.
