Killaloe or Ballina? Crossing the bridge between Clare and Tipperary

Two towns, two counties and one bridge: what is on which side, which Ballina this is, and how to arrive without a car.

By TravelPlan.guide·

Killaloe and Ballina are one place with two names, two counties and a river down the middle. Killaloe is the Clare side, on the west bank, with the cathedral, the canal and the hill that climbs to the Catholic church. Ballina is the Tipperary side, on the east bank, with the quay, most of the waterside pubs and the road up into the Arra Mountains. Waterways Ireland writes Killaloe/Ballina; the festival committee runs the Ballina-Killaloe St Patrick's Day parade. Both orders are in use. A visitor needs to know only one thing: the address on a booking may say Killaloe while the building stands in Tipperary, and the other way round.

The bridge is the town

The old stone bridge is what joins them. Waterways Ireland calls it the eighteenth-century Killaloe Bridge, and The Irish Road Trip counts thirteen arches. Walk it rather than drive it. Stand in the middle and Co. Clare is behind you and Co. Tipperary is in front, or the reverse, depending on which pub you came out of. Upriver, to the north, is the foot of Lough Derg; downriver the Shannon runs on towards Limerick.

On the Clare side, at the bridge's west end, there is a strip of ground called Between the Waters, where the Sunday farmers' market sets up. Visit Clare lists the market every Sunday, year-round. The market posts on Instagram rather than publishing hours, so check there first.

What is on which side

This matters more than it should, because people book a table on one bank and park on the other.

Killaloe, Co. Clare

  • St Flannan's Cathedral on Royal Parade, beside the canal. Its own site says it is open daily from 10am to 7pm.
  • St Molua's Oratory, up the hill beside St Flannan's Catholic church, moved there from Friar's Island when the Shannon Scheme flooded it in the 1930s.
  • The Killaloe Canal, the start of the Lough Derg Blueway paddling trails.
  • Killaloe Hotel & Spa and its O'Brien's restaurant, at the north end above the marina.
  • Ponte Vecchio and The Anchor Inn, both within a minute of the bridge.
  • Killaloe Garda Station on The Green.

Ballina, Co. Tipperary

  • Killaloe River Cruises, which despite the name leaves from Lakeside Drive in Ballina.
  • Goosers and Tuscany Bistro on Main Street.
  • The Lakeside Hotel, which calls itself Killaloe, Co. Clare on parts of its own website and stands in Ballina, Co. Tipperary.
  • Lakeland House on the Boher Road.
  • The road up to Tountinna and the Graves of the Leinstermen.

Not that Ballina

There is a much bigger Ballina in Co. Mayo, on the Moy, with its own page on this site. It has nothing to do with this one. If a search for "Ballina restaurants" hands you the River Moy, you are at the wrong end of the country. This guide always writes Ballina, Co. Tipperary for the village across the bridge.

Killaloe has the same problem in the other direction: there is a Killaloe in Ontario, Canada, with a farmers' market of its own. Check the county on anything you find online.

Getting here without a car

Neither town has a railway station. The nearest is Birdhill, Co. Tipperary, about 6.6km by road from the bridge, on the Limerick to Ballybrophy line via Nenagh. For a fuller service use Limerick Colbert, about 29km away. Bus Éireann route 323 runs from Limerick through Castleconnell and Birdhill to Ballina and on to Nenagh, and the Birdhill stop is about 170 metres from the station. Most journeys stop on the Ballina side rather than in Killaloe itself, which is a five-minute walk back across the bridge. Check the current timetable before you travel; the getting-here page has the detail.

Parking and walking

The towns are small enough to walk end to end. The boat company says there is free parking at its Lakeside Drive meeting point. Once parked, leave the car: the cathedral, the canal, the market ground, the quay and both main streets are all within about ten minutes on foot of the bridge.

When to come

The river cruises sail daily in season, the Holy Island boats run from April to the end of September, and Ballycuggaran's Blue Flag season in 2026 was 1 June to 15 September. Féile Brian Ború takes over both towns in early July, and the SCS Killaloe Music Festival fills the cathedral from 4 to 7 June 2027. Outside those weeks the towns are quiet, and Tuscany Bistro, for one, opens only Friday to Sunday, so check opening days before you plan dinner.
