Everything you need to know before you head out: weather, what to pack, the best seasons, and useful links.
Half-day highlights, full-day explorer, rainy day plan, and weekend escape: all mapped out step by step.
Killaloe lies at the foot of Lough Derg between Slieve Bernagh and the Arra Mountains, at about 40m above sea level, with the hills rising to over 400m within a few kilometres. The lake and the hills shape the weather: the shore and the towns are sheltered, the Arra slopes up to Tountinna are open and catch cloud and wind, and boat trips on the lake are weather dependent.
Local producers, markets, and makers worth a stop before you leave Killaloe.

Market
Sunday market by the bridge in Killaloe, Co. Clare, year-round.
Hours: Sundays; hours not published by the market
Holy Island boats start again in April, and the Sunday market runs all year.
Spring is when the lake comes back into play. Gerard Madden's boats to Holy Island start in April from Mountshannon Pier and run daily, weather permitting, and his site says the island is covered in narcissus in spring. Lough Derg eBike Tours runs its Holy Island ride from Killaloe Hotel & Spa from March. On land, St Flannan's Cathedral is open daily from 10am to 7pm and the Sunday market sets up at Between the Waters by the bridge every week of the year. Béal Ború is at its clearest before the summer growth, a grassy rampart over the point where the lake narrows into the Shannon. The Inis Cealtra Visitor Experience in Mountshannon has announced it will reopen in 2027, so check its season before you plan on it.
Ballycuggaran's 2026 Blue Flag season ran 1 June to 15 September. Féile Brian Ború took 1 to 5 July 2026.
Summer is the twin towns at full stretch. The SCS Killaloe Music Festival opens the season in St Flannan's Cathedral, with the 2027 edition announced for 4 to 7 June. Féile Brian Ború, the towns' own festival, ran its 33rd edition from 1 to 5 July 2026 across Killaloe and Ballina, Co. Tipperary. Ballycuggaran, about 4.6km north on the R463, held a Blue Flag for the 2026 bathing season from 1 June to 15 September, with lifeguards in season. The river cruise runs daily from Lakeside Drive in Ballina, Co. Tipperary, and the operator advises booking online ahead. Paddlers have two Blueway routes from the canal, 2.5km and 5km, rated for guided beginners or independent intermediate paddlers.
Holy Island boats stop at the end of September. Clear autumn days are the ones for Tountinna.
Autumn is walking season. The Lough Derg Way climbs 8.7km from the cathedral, over the bridge and up the Arra Mountains to the Graves of the Leinstermen on Tountinna, and the shorter 5.6km waymarked loop starts at the car park by the stones. Pick a clear day: the point of going up is the view over the foot of the lake. The Holy Island boats finish at the end of September and the eBike Holy Island tour runs into October, per its operator. The cruise boat's heated lower deck keeps it sailing in rain. Check opening days for dinner: Tuscany Bistro in Ballina, Co. Tipperary opens Friday to Sunday only, and the Pipers Inn out at Ballyheefy is worth a phone call before you drive.
Short days and an indoor plan: the cathedral, the hotel pool and the pubs by the bridge.
Winter is the towns to themselves. St Flannan's Cathedral is open daily, and the Thorgrim stone and the Romanesque doorway reward a slow look on a wet afternoon. The Sunday market keeps going year-round. The Lakeside Hotel in Ballina, Co. Tipperary has an 18-metre pool and a 40-metre water slide, and Killaloe Hotel & Spa opens its thermal suite Friday to Sunday. O'Brien's at the hotel serves dinner seven nights, which matters in the weeks when other kitchens close early in the week, and the Lakeside Hotel's O'Hara's Bar across the river in Ballina, Co. Tipperary lists regular traditional sessions. The Holy Island boats and the eBike island tour are off until spring.
