About
Glendalough is the main gateway to Wicklow Mountains National Park, a near-23,000-hectare protected area of mountain, blanket bog, lake and oak woodland that stretches south from Dublin's doorstep. The park's Information Office sits beside the Upper Lake, staffed with maps, current trail conditions and advice, and it is the starting point for ranger-led events such as the summer bat walk. The park itself is free to enter (only the car parks charge), and it is where Glendalough's nine colour-coded walking trails, from an easy lakeside stroll to the strenuous Spinc, all begin. Wildlife includes red-sika hybrid deer, peregrine falcons nesting on the cliffs above the Upper Lake, red grouse on the heather moorland, and nine species of bat.
