The Burren (Day Trip from Ennis)
From about 15 minutes north of Ennis · Rolling limestone country; walking optional elevation
About
The Burren, the great karst limestone landscape of north Clare, begins about fifteen minutes north of Ennis and makes one of the easiest and best day trips from the town. It is a country of bare grey limestone pavement, ancient stone forts and tombs, and an unusual flora where Arctic, Alpine and Mediterranean plants grow side by side on the rock, at their best from late spring. Highlights within a day's loop include the Poulnabrone Dolmen, Caherconnell stone fort, the Burren National Park and the villages of Ballyvaughan and Kilfenora. It is a UNESCO Global Geopark and a place to drive slowly, stop often and walk on the limestone. Ennis is the natural base for exploring it.
