Drogheda Museum Millmount and the Martello Tower

Millmount is the great grassed mound on the south bank that the whole town is arranged around, and it is the one place in Drogheda where the geography of the place finally makes sense. The mound itself is Anglo-Norman, raised as a motte-and-bailey by Hugh de Lacy before 1186 on ground that had been in use long before that. On top of it sits the Martello tower, and around its base the old military barracks now house the museum, run by the volunteer Old Drogheda Society. The museum is a genuine local collection rather than a slick heritage experience: guild and trade banners from the town's craft corporations, an industrial room covering Drogheda's mills, breweries and foundries, a folk kitchen, a geological collection, the old post office, and material on Drogheda Rowing Club. Craft studios sit in the courtyard alongside it. Climb the tower and you get the view that explains everything, straight down the Boyne to the viaduct with the two halves of the town spread out either side of the river.

Tips
- →Last tours run 60 minutes before closing, and the tower itself closes at 4:30pm, so aim to arrive by mid-afternoon if the tower is the point.
- →It is a genuine climb up Congress Avenue from the quays; the walk from the town centre crosses the river and goes uphill.
- →The museum opens all year except over Christmas, on shorter Sunday and bank holiday hours.
