Scholars is a Victorian red-brick building off King Street that spent its first life as a Christian Brothers monastery, and the dining room still has the ceiling and the proportions to prove it. It is family-run, it holds two AA rosettes, and it is the room Drogheda books for the occasions that matter: the anniversary, the christening lunch, the table of ten after a funeral. The kitchen cooks modern Irish, and the afternoon tea is made in house by their own pastry team and has to be booked 24 hours ahead. There is a bar and gastrolounge alongside the restaurant if you want the food without the full sit-down. Book, especially at weekends; this is not a walk-in room.
