About

The ruins of the Franciscan friary, generally known locally as Donegal Abbey, stand on the shore of the harbour, built in 1474 on land granted by the O'Donnells. It was in these ruins that the four scholars later commemorated on the Diamond compiled the Annals of the Four Masters between 1632 and 1636. The site is freely accessible on the shore a short walk from the town centre and gives a quieter, less-visited counterpart to the restored castle across the water.
