About

The Bank Walk is Donegal Town's best low-effort walk, a roughly 2.3km riverside path along the River Eske that can be extended into a longer loop of around 5km using the L18451 road and the N56. The main route follows the river for around 900m with views across to the Old Abbey ruins, St Ernan's, Belle's Isle, Green Island and Donegal Bay, and it is suitable for all abilities, with benches at regular intervals and a buggy-friendly, mostly natural surface through woodland. It is the closest thing the town has to Reenagross-style walking on the doorstep, and free parking makes it an easy add-on to a castle or Diamond visit.

Highlights

  • Around 900m of riverside path directly along the River Eske
  • Views across to the Old Abbey, St Ernan's, Belle's Isle and Green Island
  • Suitable for all abilities, with benches at regular intervals
  • Free parking and a buggy-friendly surface

Tips

  • The main 2.3km route is enough for most visitors; the extended loop adds road walking via the L18451 and N56.
  • Dogs are allowed; keep to the path near the water.
  • Combine with the Abbey ruins, which sit along the same stretch of shore.
