Cahir Castle (day trip)

← All things to do

About

One of the largest and best-preserved medieval castles in Ireland, on a rocky island in the River Suir at Cahir, about 17km southwest of Cashel. Built by the Butlers from the 13th century, it kept its keep, towers, defensive walls and a working portcullis, and the OPW runs it with an exhibition and a film. It pairs naturally with the Swiss Cottage a short way downriver, and the two make an easy half-day out of Cashel. Note this is in Cahir, not Cashel.
