The other capital: country music and dancing weekends in Bundoran

Why half of rural Ireland knows Bundoran for the Allingham Arms ballroom rather than the surf, and how a dancing weekend works.

By TravelPlan.guide·

Bundoran has two reputations, and people who know one are often surprised by the other. To surfers it is Tullan Strand and the Peak. To a large part of rural Ireland it is the place you go for a weekend of country music and dancing. Discover Bundoran markets both, as the surf capital and the country capital, and on a Saturday night in the West End you can see the two crowds pass each other on the street.

The Allingham Arms and the ballroom

The centre of the country side is the Allingham Arms in the West End, which calls itself the capital of country music and was named IMRO Live Music Venue of the Year in 2023. Discover Bundoran says that every weekend the top country stars are in town, playing stages all over Bundoran but particularly the Allingham, naming established acts such as Declan Nerney, Derek Ryan, Jimmy Buckley and Mick Flavin alongside newer names. The hotel's own events list for late October 2026 had John Glenn and Brian Kerrigan on a Friday and a bill with Robert Mizzell and John Hogan on the Saturday.

The dancing happens in the Saimer Ballroom. The big draws are packaged as weekends: the Mike Denver weekend each November, which in 2026 ran on 6 and 7 November and sold as two nights' bed and breakfast with the dancing, and Christmas party nights through December. The hotel has even fitted out themed bedrooms with artwork from the streets of Nashville.

How a dancing weekend works

The format is simple. You book the package with the hotel, which bundles the rooms, breakfast and the dancing, eat in the Oceans restaurant or in Quay West, the hotel bar, and dance to the live band in the ballroom. Christmas party nights follow the same pattern, sold as a night's bed and breakfast with dinner and the Saturday dance. Single gigs outside the packages are ticketed on the hotel's events page, and in October 2026 those were ten and twenty euro.

St Patrick's weekend

The busiest music weekend outside summer is St Patrick's. The parade runs from the East End to the West End at half three on 17 March, and the Allingham programmes country acts across the weekend: in 2026 its list included Mick Flavin and Brian Kerrigan, Nigel Livingstone, Sinead McLaughlin and Sabrina Kane. Discover Bundoran notes that many businesses that close for the winter open for the long weekend.

The resort behind it

None of this is new. Bundoran became a resort when the railway arrived in 1866, and for most of the twentieth century it was one of Ireland's most popular seaside towns. The ruin of the old Astoria Ballroom is still mapped on Astoria Road, at the East End of town. Marc Geagan's local history of the area is called Dancing by the Sea. The trains stopped in 1957, but the dancing did not.

Bundoran's lost pub

One name you may hear is Brennan's Criterion Bar on Main Street, run for decades by the sisters Nan and Patricia Brennan, with no television, no music and no swearing. It opened on St Patrick's Day 1900, Nan and Patricia ran it from 1981, and it closed for the last time on the night of 30 September 2018. You cannot drink in it today.

Staying for the dancing

The Allingham Arms is a four-star with 132 rooms in the West End, many facing the sea, and free parking, so most dancers stay in the building. If it is full, the Holyrood on Main Street and the Great Northern on the links are both within a short walk or a taxi, and Maddens has nine rooms above the bar on the bridge. For dinner outside the hotel, Stoked is a couple of hundred metres further out in the West End and takes bookings through ResDiary; book it well ahead on a dance weekend. Taxis are local drivers rather than a single firm, and Discover Bundoran keeps a list, so sort your lift home before the last dance rather than after it.

If country music is not your thing

If you want a quiet room on a weekend, ask your hotel about its entertainment schedule before you book.
