St Catherine's Island and Fort
About
A tidal island just off Castle Beach, reachable on foot across the sand for roughly two hours either side of low water, and cut off completely by the sea the rest of the time. It carries St Catherine's Fort, a Palmerston-era fort begun in 1867 as part of Britain's coastal defences, later used by the Army into the 1890s. Check the tide table before crossing; the sea comes back in quickly and stranding is a real risk, not a scare story.
